Greek Anthology 6.298.3 (
Leonidas of
Tarentum); Sochares the Cynic dies, and Hunger hangs his simple possessions on a tamarisk bush as a dedication; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 125), (vol. II, 363-364), and further extracts from this epigram at
sigma 558 and
sigma 1062. Adopting the conventional sense of
kunou=xos (
purse, money-bag; cf. previous note), here Paton (459) translates "a dog-skin purse without a copper in it". Gow and Page note that the Suda lexicographer could well blunder with this entry, since Cynics have no need for dogs or collars (vol. II, 364). However, they allow it to be possible that
Leonidas might indeed have been conscious of the object as a kind of
Cynic-protector, something that Sochares would carry as symbolic of his asceticism (ibid.).
