A triangular structure on bridges having its sharp part forward in the shape of a triangle, which in fact the engineers call a wave-cutter, resembling the ram of a warship. The Khan of the Avars constructed this when he bridged the river and brought his army across to the bank near Dardania.

Note:
Attributed by Bernhardy to Menander Protector (cf. Constantine Porphyrogenitus, Excerpta de Legationibus 473-475), and accepted as such by Blockley: his fr. 38 (246-247). See also Theophylact Simocatta, Histories 8.5.6-7. The fragment is unplaced. The Avar khan might be Baian (cf. alpha 209 note) as Bernhardy suggested. Blockley suggests (287, note 332) that the river here might be the Angrus, which flows into the Brongus (Margus, Barrington Atlas map 21 grid D5) and borders Dardania (Barrington Atlas map 21 grid D7).
