If the gloss is intended as a definition of the headword, it is for a usage otherwise unattested. Usually the term refers to a type of drinking vessel. Other meanings are attested, though not outside commentary and lexicography; e.g. 'boat' (Harpokration s.v.), 'spine of an ox' (Etymologicum Magnum 543.8; 'helmet' (scholia to Demosthenes 21.158). It is possible that the gloss is an excerpt or a corruption of commentary on a passage where kumbi/a appear among other things as items of luxury, e.g. Alexis fr. 328 Kock = 329 Kassel-Austin (in Athenaeus, Deipnosophists 11.481F-482A [11.63 Kaibel]); Demosthenes 21.158 (web address 1); Lucian, Dialogues of the Dead 22.2, Diogenes Laertius 3.42.
