[1] An approximation of Theophylact Simocatta, Histories 6.11.11; cf. de Boor (243) and Whitby (177). On Sesostris see generally sigma 268, sigma 867. This particular tale about him is loosely paralleled in Diodorus Siculus 1.58.2. In Theophylact's account, Theodore, envoy to the Avars (Thrace, autumn of 593), uses the story to admonish the Avar Khan for his arrogance and temper the barbarian's demands upon the Romans. On Theodore see PLRE IIIb s.v. Theodorus(43). On the Avars see generally alpha 18 note.
