Greek Original:*kabbali/s: o( katabalw/n. oi(=on a)po\ ka/phs a(/lis e)sqi/wn. kli/netai de\ kabbali=nos. e)/gkeitai de\ h( ka/ph kai\ to\ a(/lis. peri/ttwma ga/r e)sti tw=n a)po\ ka/phs e)sqio/ntwn a)lo/gwn.
Notes:
The first gloss suggests that
kabbali/s is derived from
kataba/llw (cf.
kappa 3); but then a different etymology is offered, from words for "manger" and "enough." The headword noun in this precise form is otherwise unattested (though see n. 2 below).
[1] Same gloss (for the aorist participle
kabbalw/n) at
kappa 3.
[2] Thus far the entry has a parallel in
Etymologicum Magnum 482.18-20, though the headword there is
ka/bbalis with the variant
kaba/llhs and the glossing participle (for both) present-tense
kataba/llwn. The noun
kaba/llhs meant a nag or work-horse (cf.
Hesychius kappa6), from Latin
caballus; whence
kaballi=na or
kabali/na meant horse-dung (and Kaballinos was an alternative epithet for the emperor Constantine V Copronymus). The last sentence of the gloss suggests that the lexicographer has this sense in mind; cf.
Eustathius,
Commentary on the Odyssey 1.42.31 Stallbaum.
