Adler number: kappa,1896
Translated headword: roguery
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
This was the name for childishness adopted with deceit, and a ko/balos ["rogue"] [is] someone who behaves like that. [sc. The term] seems synonymous with buffoon. Philochorus in [book] two of the Atthis [writes]: "for it is not to be thought that, [as] some say, Dionysos became a sort of rogue and buffoon".[1] Aristotle in [book] two of History of Animals maintains that the owl, being a rogue and a mimic, catches [its prey] by imitating its dancing.[2]
