Headword:
*ki/mbika
Adler number: kappa,1616
Translated headword: kimbika, stinginess.
Vetting Status: high
Translation: [Meaning] a wasp's nest[?], or an apiary[?], or parsimony, or distortion.
Greek Original:*ki/mbika: sfhki/a, h)\ meli/ssia, h)\ mikrologi/a, h)\ diastrofh/.
Note:
Same or similar entry in other lexica -- see the references at
Photius kappa719 Theodoridis -- but one marred by textual corruption. The headword itself, transmitted as
ki/mbika, should probably be either
kimbikei/a or
kimbiki/a. In any event it seems to be connected with, and perhaps an error for,
kimbei/a "stinginess" (see LSJ s.v.). If so, the third and fourth glosses here are intelligible enough. (For the third,
mikrologi/a, see
mu 1048 and generally LSJ s.v.) The wasps and bees, however, are out of place here if (as
Tiberius Hemsterhuys suggested)
sfhki/a or
sfiki/a -- which then generated
melissi/a or
me/lissa -- should actually be
skifi/a or
sknifi/a (cf.
Hesychius kappa2700).
