Adler number: kappa,1582
Translated headword: latticed gates
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] particularly the double gates, the ones that they call double-folding. Or kinklis, [meaning] the hole, through which the key (kleis) is pushed.[1]
Greek Original:
*kigkli/das: i)di/ws ta\s dipla=s qu/ras, a(/stinas dikli/das fasi/n. h)\ kigkli/s, h( o)ph/, di' h(=s h( klei\s pe/mpetai.
Notes:
The headword noun (cf. kappa 1583) is here in the accusative plural. This form occurs in (e.g.) Plutarch, Caesar 68.1, and Libanius, Letters 119.3 and Speeches 1.41. However, the entire definition is taken, with slight wording changes, from the scholia to Aristophanes, Knights 641, glossing kigkli/da in the accusative singular.
[1] Apart from the scholia to Aristophanes (see above), the etymology is also alluded to by Eustathius, Commentary to the Iliad III p. 420 van der Valk, deriving both dikli/s (the "double-folding" of the definition) and kigkli/s from klei/s.
