Headword:
*kaki/onos
Adler number: kappa,155
Translated headword: of a worse one
Vetting Status: high
Translation: [Meaning] of an inferior one.
Greek Original:*kaki/onos: tou= xei/ronos.
Note:
The headword (evidently quoted from somewhere) is the masculine or neuter genitive singular form of kaki/wn, the comparative of kako/s. This particular form is preserved only here, once in Theognostos the Grammarian (Anecdota Graeca (Oxon.) 2.152.5), and once, according to Adler, as a lemma in the Ambrosian Lexicon. Other forms are found regularly in epic, lyric, and tragedy (this last with long i). The more frequent term in prose is the one found in the gloss, xei/rwn, which is often termed an "irregular" comparative form of kako/s (so LSJ: web address 1 below), but is actually suppletive, deriving from the obsolescent *xe/rhs.
