The Suda has a tension between the proper meaning of khle/w, "charm, beguile" (kappa 1506, kappa 1507, kappa 1514), and the moralising "trick, deceive" (kappa 1504, kappa 1505, kappa 1515). The link between the two senses is made in epsilon 436; but prior to that, Choeroboscus also made the connection (Epimerismi on the Psalms p. 182 Gaisford), deriving ka/llos "beauty" from khle/w: "ka/llos 'beauty' ... from khlw=, to enchant, and to trick; for we are utterly beguiled by the beautiful, and enchanted, and tricked."
