Headword: *keiri/a
Adler number: kappa,1480
Translated headword: swathing-band
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] wrapping with swathing clothes.
Greek Original:
*keiri/a: h( sparga/nwsis.
Note:
LSJ s.v. II: "swathing band, bandage", as opposed to "bedstead-band" (on which see kappa 1479). As LSJ records it, this usage is late, found in papyri, Soranus, and Hesychius (although the instance of khrei/ais in Hesychius cited actually glosses keiri/ais in John 11:44, "grave clothes" -- a related sense conflated in LSJ, but not associated with babies). No other lexicon gives this sense: they either refer to Aristophanes' bedstead-bands, as in kappa 1479, or the grave clothes of the New Testament.
