[1] The word is attested only here and in the
scholia vetera to
Aristophanes,
Clouds 339. The scholiast treats
kestre/a as a synonym of
ke/stra (
kappa 1429), both being first declension forms; but
kestre/a appears to be a back-formation from
kestre/as, the accusative plural of
kestreu/s, and is not attested outside the scholion and the Suda. So it does not contribute to the distinction attempted. Accordingly, the Suda considers
kestre/a as merely the feminine version of
kestreu/s.
[2]
alpha 4660; the word used there is
kestre/wn, the genitive plural of
kestreu/s. Though the kinds of fish discussed there are discussed together by
Athenaeus,
Deipnosophists 7.284F-285A (7.22 Kaibel), that does not make the mullet a kind of anchovy.
