Translation: Aristophanes [writes]: "for [the] opportune time, which for men is the greatest chairman of every deed." He means that the opportune time is the timely and most/very useful [thing] for each activity: where even serious [efforts] occurring at the wrong time are not accepted, as a physician conversing with one who suffers about the nature of his illness; as if one were to converse with drunken men about temperance.[1] For what is good, if it does not occur in a good manner, [is] not good.[2]
And elsewhere: "Justinian, whether not thinking opportunely because of old age, or for some other reason, would have jumbled the orthodox belief concerning Christ, if he had not departed from among men."[3]

Notes:
[1] In fact
Sophocles (as, Adler reports, in ms B),
Electra 75-6, with scholion; cf.
epsilon 3615.
[2] An extra, general observation on the above. It is not from the Sophoclean scholion; rather, from an indeterminable source also quoted in writers later than the Suda (Michael Glycas,
Nicolaus Catascepenus) -- unless those authors took it from the Suda itself.
[3] Quotation unidentifiable. (At
iota 436, a similar allegation is made about Julian of Halicarnassus.)
Keywords: biography; Christianity; comedy; daily life; ethics; food; historiography; history; imagery; medicine; proverbs; religion
