Besides being textually clumsy, this entry contains a major substantive error. The entry derives from Harpokration s.v. (commenting on the appearance of the name in
Lysias fr. 117 Sauppe, now 159 Carey OCT), and the best manuscripts there read 'amongst [the] Thebans'. The variant 'amongst [the] Athenians' was presumably introduced by someone who knew of the existence of the office of polemarch in
Athens (see generally
pi 1878,
pi 1879, and cf.
pi 1880). In any event, Ismenias is attested in
Xenophon and elsewhere as a leading Theban of the early C4 BCE.
