Polybius fr. 164 Büttner-Wobst. Büttner-Wobst notes (535) that Toup attributed this fragment to
Polybius; for an analogous Polybian passage (ibid.) characterizing an obsessive instinct for survival as ignoble in nature, cf. 28.21 (web address 1). The Suda here transmits
a)gennei/as (genitive singular of the feminine noun
a)ge/nneia,
baseness), but Büttner-Wobst follows Hultsch in replacing it with the alternative spelling
a)genni/as (ibid.). Apropos of this fragment, Walbank gestures (753) at
Polybius 30.7 (web address 2) and observes that there
Polybius qualifies pointed moral pronouncements in the vein of this fragment as what might be given in retort. But, in reflection, Walbank also concedes that -- as Schweighäuser emphasized -- the present fragment could represent an assertion that has been advanced disingenuously (ibid.).
