Although it literally means "spattered with mud", prophlaki/zesqai (present, middle-passive infinitive) is generally used in a metaphorical sense: "to be treated with contumely"; cf. During the Lazic War (541-562), in the winter of 556-557, a delegation of influential Misimians (subjects of the Lazi (Colchians; cf. kappa 1979); Misimia is in the Caucasus Mountains, present-day Georgia, Barrington Atlas map 87 grid G1) attempts to win the favor of the Persian military commander Nachoragan (cf.
