Translated headword: Eon, Eion
Vetting Status: high
Translation: Demosthenes in the [speech]
Against Timokrates [mentions it].[1] It is a city, a colony of Mendaians.
Greek Original:*)/hwn: *dhmosqe/nhs e)n tw=| kata\ *timokra/tous. po/lis e)sti/, *mendai/wn a)poiki/a.
Notes:
The Suda gives the form Eon, though
Eion is more commonly seen.
This is not the well-attested
Eion on the R.Strymon but a place apparently to the west of it, somewhere in Chalkidike: see Hornblower 157-8. Confusion between the two is already evident in Harpokration s.v., from which the present entry derives.
Besides
Demosthenes, Harpok. cites
Thucydides 4.7 (on the
Mende connection; cf. generally
mu 593) and
Theopompus FGrH 115 F51.
[1] The title of the speech is a mistake (in all lexica) for '
Against Aristokrates', i.e. not
Demosthenes 24, but
Demosthenes 23.199 (web address 1).
