[1] The headword is third person singular, imperfect, of the verb
a)qloqete/w (cf. generally
alpha 742); presumably extracted here from the quotation given, where it is used figuratively.
[2] Gainas, an Arian Goth (d. 400 AD), replaced Leo as
magister militum (399-400) after Leo failed to stop the invasion of Tribigild, a Goth leader. Owing to Gainas' concessions to his fellow Goth Tribigild, emperor
Arcadius had to submit to unfavorable conditions. These compromises with Tribigild made Gainas suspect, and soon he was killed along with 7,000 other Goths in riots at Constantinople. Before his death, however, Gainas wielded impressive power and held two important Roman nobles, Aurelian and Saturninus, hostage. See also
pi 1939.
