[Meaning] warmth.
Also [sc. attested is the phrase] 'blind marshes', [meaning] things that are unforeseen.
*(/elh: h( qermasi/a. kai\ *(/elh tufla/, ta\ a)pro/opta.
The entry seems to conflate homophonous words.
First comes one that occurs elsewhere -- e.g. apparently
Aristophanes,
Wasps 772: see LSJ s.v. -- as
ei(/lh.
Hesychius epsilon875 glosses this as 'ray of the sun, 'warmth' (as here,
qermasi/a). Other entries in
Hesychius imply the existence of dialect forms with a simple epsilon in the first syllable (s.v.
be/la,
ge/lan and
ge/las (beta76, gamma85 and gamma90 respectively), allowing us to imagine something closer to the form the Suda presents, but that form is unattested in this meaning elsewhere.
The second part of the entry proffers a figurative phrase (of unidentifiable origin) which includes a more familiar use of the form
e(/lh, namely the nominative/accusative plural of the neuter noun
e(/los, 'marsh' (
epsilon 900).
