*)ektruxwqei/s: e)kpiasqei/s, e)kfqarei/s.
In this entry the text of the TLG (which is the text that appears in Suda On Line entries) departs slightly from the print version of Adler's Teubner edition. The print version has
e)ktuxwqei/s as the headword, rather than the
e)ktruxwqei/s that appears here. The reading
e)ktuxwqei/s was consciously adopted by Adler for reasons that will be explained further below, but she subsequently changed her mind and stated her preference for
e)ktruxwqei/s in the consolidated list of corrigenda in vol. V of her edition. The TLG incorporated this corrigendum in its version of the text.
As a whole, the entry =
Synagoge epsilon257,
Photius epsilon528 Theodoridis; cf.
Hesychius epsilon769. Both the headword and the two glosses are aorist passive participles in the masculine nominative singular. The spelling of the headword varies in the mss. of the lexica, but should almost certainly be
e)ktruxwqei/s, from
e)ktruxo/w (a verb first attested in
Thucydides: see LSJ s.v.). Latte's edition of
Hesychius, Cunningham's edition of the
Synagoge, Bachmann's edition of recension B of the
Synagoge (215.4) and Theodoridis' edition of
Photius all present that reading. Adler initially followed Suda ms A and Boysen-Cohn's edition of
Synagoge recension A in reading
e)ktuxwqei/s, which is out of alphabetical order and otherwise unattested in this or any other form. While the specific form
e)ktruxwqei/s is similarly unattested, prior to the Suda, outside lexicography, it at least has the benefit of deriving from a verb which has other forms solidly attested. On the other hand, there is no evidence that the Suda compiler actually ever wrote
e)ktruxwqei/s, even if it is what he
should have written. (Other Suda mss (and ps.-
Zonaras) have
e)ktoixwqei/s, clearly a pronunciation-based alternative spelling for
e)ktuxwqei/s.)
