Third person singular, imperfect indicative active, of
kni/zw (here in sense II.2 of LSJ s.v., see web address 1). It appears in this form twice in
Herodotus: at 6.62.1 (glosses to which lie behind the present entry) and at 7.12.1, in both instances in this figurative sense. In the present instance the subject is erotic arousal 'chafing' King Ariston of
Sparta, so the 'biting' gloss is equally metaphorical.
