A sentence fragment wrenched from the text of
Synesius,
Epistle 73 (221B Hercher, translation at web address 1), which contains two interesting textual issues:
(1) Whereas the Suda and most mss of
Synesius begin the relative clause
o(\s a)\n mh\... ("who does not..."), a few mss of
Synesius have
o(\s d' a)\n mh\... ("and who does not..."), which makes better sense and has led to the supplementation of "[and]" in the translation above.
(2) The last word of that same clause is accented as
paranomw=n in the Suda (and the translation follows that reading), but the mss of
Synesius have
parano/mwn, which would make the clause read "who does not bring charges for illegalities" (cf. the classical Athenian
grafh\ panano/mwn:
gamma 439, etc.).
Note that this passage of
Synesius is the only pre-Suda attestation of the headword, a verbal adjective from a rare compound verb
e)kkeleu/w (see
alpha 3485).
