[Son of] Sosipolis;[1] an Athenian; a comic poet. He began to stage plays at the age of seventeen. He produced 17 plays and won with 7. He died after his ship sank in the Hellespont during the war against the Lacedaemonians;[2] and as the outcome of this it was forbidden for a poet to serve on campaign.[3] His plays [are] Goats, Draft-dodger[4] or Men-women, and others.

Notes:
OCD(4) s.v. (pp.550-1), by K.J. Dover.
[1] Adler prints the nominative case, which cannot be the right way to resolve the transmitted *swsi/lis. Read genitive, *swsipo/lidos (Meineke).
[2] The phrase "in the Hellespont" (today's Dardanelles, Barrington Atlas map 51 grid H4) naturally suggests the Battle of Aegospotami, 405 BCE; cf. OCD(4) s.v. (pp. 17-18). Despite it, however, we should perhaps think of the Battle of Arginusae (cf. alpha 3778 and OCD(4) s.v. (p. 148); after three small islands nearby, Barrington Atlas map 57 grid E2, east of Lesbos) in the previous year, notorious for the number of Athenians drowned (Xenophon, Hellenica 1.6.33-1.7.35, web address 1).
[3] This stipulation, otherwise unattested, is dubious.
[4] The title should probably be plural: *)astra/teutoi. See PCG v.5 p. 314.
