Headword: *eu)a/
Adler number: epsilon,3353
Translated headword: ew-aa
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
An imitation of the sound [bleat] of a billy-goat.
"The billy-goat leapt out of the well bleating the same, ewaa."[1]
Greek Original:
*eu)a/: tra/gou fwnh=s mi/mhma. o( de\ tra/gos e)k tou= fre/atos a)peph/dhse to\ au)to\ fwnh/sas eu)a/.
Notes:
We are reminded that the victory cry of maenads (bacchants), as in EuripidesBacchae, eu)oi= (epsilon 3785, epsilon 3787) or eu)ai/, is based on the bleat of the (sacrificed) tragos or billy-goat, itself a symbol of Dionysus that gives its name (we must assume) to tragedy. This gives the point to the sinister last cry of AristophanesEcclesiazusae, as transmitted at epsilon 2807 (end, note 27): eu)ai/, eu)ai/, eu)a/, eu)a/, "the end of AristophanesEcclesiazusae." Cf. the baa-ing of a sheep at beta 250.
