Greek Original:*)eswmatopoi/ei: e)/platte. *polu/bios: w(sanei\ kai\ to\ au)to/maton kai\ tu/xh tis e)swmatopoi/ei ta\s tou= *skipi/wnos pra/ceis, w(/st' e)pifaneste/ras kai\ mei/zonas a)ei\ fai/nesqai th=s prosdoki/as.
Notes:
[1] The headword is third person singular, imperfect, of
swmatopoie/w (cf.
sigma 839,
sigma 840,
sigma 841, and esp.
sigma 842 for the same form); presumably extracted from the quotation given.
[2]
Polybius fr. 47 Büttner-Wobst. (LSJ s.v. III.2 obscures its root sense here with 'exalt, magnify'.) See also
sigma 842, noted already, for another fr. of
Polybius. It is unclear to which Scipio the present fragment refers. Büttner-Wobst notes (520) that Schweighäuser thought that it concerned Scipio Africanus the Elder (Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, 236-183 BCE; cf. OCD(4) s.v. p.382). However, Büttner-Wobst also cites (ibid.), Nissen's suggestion (276) that the fragment refers to Scipio Africanus the Younger (Publius Cornelius Scipio
Aemilianus Africanus, 185/4-129 BCE; cf. OCD(4) p.381). Büttner-Wobst further notes (520) that
Polybius was indeed sufficiently familiar with Scipio the Younger (
Polybius 36.8, web address 1) so as to justify the fragment's personal characterization.
