Menekles or Kallistrates[1] in the [treatise] About Athenians writes thus: "for after the Painted [Stoa] and the Royal Stoa are the so-called Herms".[2] Some used to be called Hipparcheian Herms, after Hipparchos the son of Peisistratos.
