Adler number: epsilon,2867
Translated headword: seven-sheared (?)
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] she who/which has thick hair; she who/which is able to have a haircut seven times. For pe/cai [means] to cut the hair, or to comb it.
Greek Original:
*(epta/pektos: h( baqei=an e)/xousa ko/mhn, h( e(pta/kis duname/nh karh=nai. pe/cai ga\r to\ kei=rai, h)\ kteni/sai.
Notes:
Adjective -- of which LSJ s.v. ventures no translation -- here (as the glossing shows) in the feminine nominative singular. Similar glossing in Hesychius and other lexica.
The headword should probably be connected with the epic poem e(pta/pektos ai)/c, "Seven-sheared Goat", mentioned in one of the ancient biographies of Homer as belonging in the category of his "playful" works, paignia (alongside the Battle of Frogs and Mice and Margites).
On "seven" meaning "a lot," see epsilon 2868.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic; mathematics; poetry; zoology
