Greek Original:*)epifrasqei/s: e)nqumhqei/s, dialogisa/menos. *)arriano/s: o( de\ *ne/arxos e)pifrasqei/s, o(/ti spei/resqai th\n xw/ran ei)ko/s, le/gei pro\s *)arxi/dan, katalhpte/a sfi/sin ei)/h to\ xwri/on.
Notes:
The headword is the aorist passive participle, masculine singular nominative, of
e)pifra/zw, employed here in a middle sense. (The corresponding glossing participles are aorist passive and aorist middle.) It is probably extracted here from the quotation given, though there is an earlier instance in
Herodotus 4.200.2 (and two in Apollonius Rhodius,
Argonautica).
[1] An abridgement of Arrian,
Indica 27.8. The text of Arrian reads
katalhpte/on ('should be taken under control') rather than
katalhpte/a, but this produces little to no difference in translation. More important, 'Archidas' should be
Archias (of
Pella). For Nearchos see
nu 117.
