Headword:
*)epita/fion
Adler number: epsilon,2662
Translated headword: funeral
Vetting Status: high
Translation: "The blow itself was also a funeral encomium of his virtue".
Greek Original:*)epita/fion: au(/th h( plhgh\ kai\ th=s a)reth=s au)tw=| e)pita/fion h)=n e)gkw/mion.
Note:
The quotation is an elaborated version of a phrase in Theophylact Simocatta,
Histories 2.6.3; cf. de Boor (79-80) and Whitby (50). The original has neither 'the blow' nor 'encomium', i.e. the present headword adjective is used there -- as commonly elsewhere (
alpha 18,
kappa 1356, etc) -- as if it were a noun. The quotation is drawn from Theophylact's tale of a badly wounded Roman soldier found after the Battle of Solachon (586); cf.
alpha 141 and cross-references therein.
