[2] An approximation of Theophylact Simocatta,
Histories 1.15.13, via
Excerpta de legationibus of Constantine Porphyrogenitus 480.19-20; cf. de Boor (70) and Whitby (42). In the spring of 586 Roman general Philippicus (cf.
phi 349) relayed the peace proposal of Persian envoy Mebod (cf. generally
alpha 1998 note) to Maurice (cf.
mu 294). Neither this nor the source includes the headword verb but a related noun,
e)pistoleu/s ('secretary'), for which see also
epsilon 2631. The original has
tou\s *persw=n lo/gous in place of the Suda's
tw=n *persw=n tou\s lo/gous. The Suda's version leaves open the possibility that the compiler thought it was the Persian general who did the sending.
