Esp. of the sun in an eclipse; there are well-known instances in (e.g.) Plutarch's lives of Pericles and Nicias.
In ps.-Zonaras this headword does have a gloss (evidently drawn from a source other than the Suda): "to lie over something, and to shut off the light."
