The [verb that means] I question.[1] Also [sc. attested is its present participle] 'inquiring', [meaning one who is] questioning.[2]
*)epe/rw: to\ e)rwtw=. kai\ *)epero/menos, e)rwtw/menos.
This entry does not reflect attested literary usage, not even that of the Byzantine period. The verbal stem of which the headword seems to be a compound (
e)/romai), occurs only in the middle. The active form presented here would seem to be a back-formation from the middle participle glossed in the second part of the entry. The verb used as a gloss in both cases,
e)rwta- does not normally occur in a middle sense, so despite what the lexicographer seems to think the middle/passive participle
e)rwtw/menos should mean 'being questioned' rather than 'questioning'.
