[Meaning he/she/it] was blooming upon, was lying upon.
*)epenh/noqen: e)ph/nqei, e)pe/keito.
Similar to
Hesychius epsilon4412, but identical to a scholion to
Homer,
Iliad 2.219 (web address 1), where the headword occurs (without, however, the nu-moveable at the end; cf.
Iliad 10.134,
Odyssey 8.365). The scholiast here seems to associate the headword with
a)nqe/w ('bloom'), and he is followed tentatively in that respect by some modern authorities including LSJ (web address 2). Even among the scholiasts of
Iliad 2.219, however, there were different opinions about the etymology (see also schol. to
Odyssey 8.365, ps.-Herodian 41,
Etymologicum Gudianum 498 and
Etymologicum Magnum 354.41.
Although the headword is apparently perfect or pluperfect in form, it is glossed here with imperfect verbs.
