The headword itself -- aorist active participle, masculine nominative plural, of e)palla/ssw -- occurs in Homer, Iliad 13.359 (web address 1) where, in an image about warfare, it refers to "passing over" one end of a rope over the other to make a knot. This is glossed in Apollonios Sophistes, Homeric Lexicon (70.26, cf. 75.17, 129.18; Hesychius epsilon4131) with e)piple/cantes ('intertwining'), among other words. Surely this is the ultimate origin of the Suda's nonsensical e)pile/cantes ('selecting'), an error already in Lexica Segueriana 226.6, and repeated in ps.-Zonaras.
