epsilon 454) or 'avert'. It does, however, occasionally refer to the sacrifices seers perform in the process of divination (e.g.
Zosimus,
Historia nova 2.12.2; cf.
Theophrastus,
Historia plantarum 5.9.8), and more frequently to sacrifices performed by seers as a result of their divination.
