[1] Both the headword and this gloss are translated as second person middle/passive indicatives, which is appropriate to every surviving instance of the headword. Morphologically speaking, both could also be third person active subjunctives. Every attestation of the headword (in this form) has the more metaphorical connotation of 'feel compunction' or 'feel regard', a sense which this gloss can also have (See LSJ s.v. e)pistre/fw II.3 (web address 2)). Cf. tau 549. Elsewhere, other forms of the headword are glossed with the equivalent form of e)pistre/fomai or with a periphrasis involving the noun e)pistrofh/: e.g. Hesychius epsilon3393; Lexica Segueriana 94.13; scholia to Homer, Iliad 15.554; Apollonius, Homeric Lexicon 69.21.
