Polybius 9.40.5 (web address 1 below). The passage, though incomplete in the manuscript transmission, tells about the measures taken by the Acarnanians when faced by an invasion of the Aetolians led by Scopas in 211 BCE. After having sent to Epirus their women, children and elderly people, the Acarnanians solemnly swore to fight the invaders with all their might, and bound themselves not to admit back any soldiers fleeing from the battle.
