[Meaning a place] in which [people] live their lives.
*diaithth/rion: e)n w(=| diaitw=ntai.
Same entry, according to Adler, in the
Ambrosian Lexicon.
The headword, a neuter noun, is unlikely to be related to the technical meaning of
diaita/w as "arbitrate" (cf.
delta 888,
delta 890, etc.), which would require it to bear the otherwise-unattested meaning 'arbitration-place' or the like. Rather, in attested instances
diaithth/rion is a "living-room", derived from the primary meaning of the verb ("lead one's life", "dwell"; LSJ at web address 1). See
Xenophon,
Oeconomicus 9.4 (plural), possibly the genesis of the entry;
Procopius,
On Buildings 1.9.9 (singular).
