Headword: *diaxw/rous
Adler number: delta,842
Translated headword: intervals
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the distances of [= between] battalions.[1] "And thus [he] filled up the intervals by the close formation of the army".[2]
Greek Original:
*diaxw/rous: ta\ diasth/mata tw=n lo/xwn. ou(/tw te a)neplh/rwse th=| pukno/thti tou= stratou= tou\s diaxw/rous.
Notes:
Both headword and gloss are in the accusative plural, the headword presumably (though not demonstrably) extracted from the quotation given.
The headword is a military term, attested in the masculine form only here and in ps.-Zonaras s.v. (which is evidently taken from here). It occurs in neuter form in various military texts broadly contemporary with the Suda: 'Heron of Byzantium' (a.k.a. the Parangelmata Poliorcetica), De stratagematibus; Nicephorus Uranus, Tactica, Nicephorus II Phocas, ps.-Codinus. This difference in form probably indicates that the compiler is using another, more ancient, source (which, according to Adler, could be Aelian's treatise on tactics; see Prolegomena p.XVIII in Adler's vol.I).
[1] For the 'battalions' (lochoi) see generally lambda 718 and esp. lambda 719.
[2] Quotation unidentifiable.
