Adler number: delta,533
Translated headword: cancellation of a lawsuit
Vetting Status: high
Translation: When the defendant [sc. in a trial in classical
Athens] is acquitted of the charge, either by acquiescence of the prosecutor or by determination of a circumstance,[1] and he is no longer being charged by anyone, [this] is expressed as cancellation of a lawsuit.
Greek Original:*diagrafh\ di/khs: o(/tan a)pallagh=| tou= e)gklh/matos o( feu/gwn, h)\ kata\ sugxw/rhsin tou= diw/kontos h)\ kata\ dia/gnwsin tuxo/ntos, kai\ mhke/ti para\ mhdeno\s e)gkalh=tai, diagrafh\ di/khs le/getai.
Notes:
Likewise, variously, in other lexica. Nevertheless, this sense of
diagrafh/ is not registered in LSJ (IV there, cancellation of a debt, comes closest), and this headword phrase as a whole is unattested in classical
Athens. It is probably a phrase generated by lexicographers from the related
verb (for which see
delta 535).
[1] Adler notes Hemsterhuys's proposed emendation of
tuxo/ntos to
tou= a)/rxontos, i.e. 'by determination of the official'. This should probably be adopted; cf. generally Harrison 104.
