Iliad 2.115, where the quoted phrase occurs. The hiatus shows that the original formula must have had
duskleve/' *)/argos with a digamma and the final alpha elided. The Attic accusative
dusklea= with long final alpha (as in
Euripides,
Hippolytus 405) is a contraction of
dusklee/a from *
duskleve/a.
