[sc. A proverbial phrase] in reference to silly/unintelligible people.
*diqura/mbwn nou=n e)/xeis e)la/ttona: e)pi\ tw=n a)dianoh/twn.
This phrase, though not in the paroemiographers, is transmitted to us (and expressly called proverbial) by the scholiasts to
Aristophanes,
Birds 1393, such as
Tzetzes (
Commentarii ad Aves 1392, ed. Koster). The reference is to the parody of Cinesias (
kappa 1639) and the other exponents of the new dithyramb (
delta 1029,
kappa 2647,
pi 3225,etc.) in
Birds.
Compare generally Lucullus's retort to Pompey: "do I seem to you to have less sense than the cranes and the storks?" (
Plutarch,
Lucullus 39.5).
