It must be quoted from somewhere: Latte on Hesychius s.v. confidently nominates the Septuagint (2 Maccabees 3.4) but there are numerous alternatives, beginning with Thucydides 8.90.1 (on Phrynichus and Alcibiades); cf. also under beta 171.
