The transmitted headword, xrei/ein, is puzzling. It would seem to be the present active infinitive of xrei/w, but the gloss fits the meaning of xreio/w, the infinitive of which would be xreiou=n. Valckenaer and Ruhnken proposed that the headword read xri/ein, from xri/w ("anoint [cf. chi 470]; prick, wound").
