The verb in the phrase (
chi 264) is more usually encountered in the context of raising the hand to vote (see
chi 261,
chi 262, and cf.
chi 263), but here means, more simply, to span with the hand. In the mss of
Artemidorus the verb has been transmitted as
xeirokopei=n, but the Suda's version has rightly been preferred.
