Name of a city.
*broi=sis: o)/noma po/lews.
Attested in this precise form only here and, according to Adler, in the
Ambrosian Lexicon (879), so of uncertain location. Perhaps [NF] in Macedonia:
Stephanus of
Byzantium lists both a people called the Braisoi and an area called Brousis -- home to the Brousoi -- there. Alternatively [CR], a town called Brysis occurs in lists of archiepiscopal sees subject to the patriarch of Constantinople (so e.g. Nicholas Mysticus,
Opuscula diversa ed. Westerink, 191b.80); and
*bru/sis is homophonous with
*broi=sis in Byzantine pronunciation.
