Greek Anthology 6.129.1-2 (
Leonidas of
Tarentum), a dedication to Athena of spoils exacted from the Lucanians (abridged); cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 118), (vol. II, 344-345), and a further extract from this epigram at
theta 605. The Lucanians were from Samnium (central-southern Italy, Barrington Atlas map 44 grids F2-G2) and were often on hostile terms with the Tarentines from ca. 295 BCE to 285 BCE (vol. II, 344). But beyond this it is difficult to reliably assign a place and date for this dedication, as Gow and Page explain (ibid.).
