Adler number: alpha,658
Translated headword: aenes, (?)never-ending
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. Something] everlasting, clear.
Greek Original:
*)ahne/s: to\ a)i/+dion, to\ lampro/n.
Notes:
Same entry in ps.-Zonaras; similar one in Hesychius alpha1513, with three glosses -- the first as here, then la/bron (sic: "turbulent") and a)/qlion ("wretched").
The headword, neuter singular, must be quoted from somewhere but otherwise unattested in this form. The Suda's glossing suggests that this adjective is understood to be a variant of a)enah/s (cf. alpha 552, alpha 553, alpha 631), perhaps with a quantitative metathesis. Alternatively, it might be an Ionic form of a)ane/s cited by Hesychius alpha18 as meaning "not to be accomplished." At Hesychius alpha1513 itself, however, Latte cites 'Archil[ochus] fr. 38', i.e. his phrase dei=pnon ai)hne/s there; see also Hesychius alpha1834.
