[Meaning] that which is black/dark.
*)azhlo/en: to\ me/lan.
Same entry in ps.-
Zonaras and, according to Adler, the
Ambrosian Lexicon.
This adjective, here neuter nominative/accusative singular, is otherwise unattested and its etymology is unclear. It could be related to
a)/zhlos "unenviable, dreary" (
alpha 590), but the suffix seems arbitrary. (It should not be an Ionic form of the adjective
a)zale/os [
alpha 579,
alpha 580], which has a short alpha.)
