The traditional view, reflected in the second gloss here, was that the word was related to h(du/s and h(/domai (root *swād-). But Wackernagel suggested that it might be an archaic participle from a zero-grade of the root *nes- seen in ne/omai and no/stos, cf. nu 133, nu 134, nu 500, nu 501.
